The love of the good Shepherd

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. – John 10:11

Notice that the Savior doesn’t say that He is a good shepherd.  He is the good shepherd.  There are a couple things going on in these words.  First, Jesus is identifying Himself as the Shepherd prophesied in Ezekiel and Isaiah.  He is, therefore, announcing Himself as the Messiah.

Second, He is displaying His love for His people.  Unlike hired hands who would flee at the first sign of danger, Jesus stays to protect the flock.  And just as David faced a bear to protect his sheep, the greater David would face the wrath of God for His.  And there is no greater love than this.  This is the epitome, the highest example, of love.

Today, how will you reflect on Christ’s love for the sheep?  How should it affect your everyday life?

Shepherd, thank You for Your love.
