Why God judges men

Some just cannot see God as angry.  They refuse to believe that God could be wrathful.  But this line of thinking is the very reason why God’s wrath burns against sin.  In Romans 1, Paul outlines the depravity of man, and he explains why God turned humanity over to its own sinfulness.  In Romans 1:25, we see the reason:

Man has chosen a lie over God.

Why did God give humanity up “in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves” (Romans 1:24)?  Verse 25: “because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie”.  Rather than believe and obey the God who is, they preferred to fashion gods of their liking.  They created idols and backstories, and their “gods” allowed them to live as they please.

They “worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator” (v25).  Do we see how foolish this is?  They created idols, mimicking created things like men, birds, animals, etc. (v23), and they chose to worship creation rather than Creator.

This is what we were talking about in the introduction.  When one says, “I can’t believe in a God who _______”, they are ignoring the true God and fashioning one in their own image.  It’s the same old idolatry spun in a modern way.  It is not up to us to create God; it is our duty to worship the God who created us, as He is.

Perhaps you’re reading this and you’re realizing that you’ve done this–you’ve created a god of your own imagination, because the God of the Bible didn’t sound appealing to you.  If that’s the case, there is still an opportunity for you right now to forsake that lie and to exchange it for the truth about God.  He is who He is, and He is magnificent.  He is the Creator of all things and His Son is the Savior of sinners like you and me.
