Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, – Ephesians 4:15
Let’s focus on the phrase, “speaking the truth in love”. The word “rather” indicates for us that this is the alternative to being “children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine”, etc. (v14). Rather than that, we are to grow up in Christ. By what means? “Speaking the truth in love”.
The church was not to allow each other to be swept away by every wind of doctrine. That would be decidedly unloving. To demonstrate love for one another, we must speak the truth. And, “in love”, describes the manner in which we must do it. We must speak the truth “in love”. We mustn’t speak it in haughtiness or self-righteousness or disdain. We must speak it in love, on account of love, and in a loving manner.
These days, people try to sell letting people believe whatever they want to believe and do what they want to do as “love”. But true love speaks the truth. True love cares not just for the feelings, but for the soul. True love is gentle, but it is also adamant. Love others and speak truth to them. Love others by speaking truth to them. And speak truth to them lovingly.
Lord, help us to speak the truth in love.
