For all the peoples walk each in the name of its god, but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God forever and ever. – Micah 4:5
In the midst of coming judgment, there is great hope in this section of Micah. A remnant would be preserved and the promise of God is that we will walk in the name of the LORD our God, that is walk in His strength. For how long? Forever and ever. What a promise, given Judah’s coming trials!
At the same time, it was a commitment being made. Whereas other peoples would walk each in the name of its gods, false, powerless idols, the remnant would walk in the name of Yahweh. It’s a commitment to not be as the other nations and to be instead God’s people.
In Christ, Christians today are God’s people, and the promise and the commitment are the same. For all who believe in Him, we will walk in the name of Jesus forever and ever. What a promise, given our toil in this fallen world! And it is also our commitment. Even though the world around us will bend to their idols, we will worship Jesus and Him alone and invite others to join us.
God, even though others will walk in the name of their gods, help us to walk in Your name forever.
