All people, all nations

1 Praise the LORD, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! 2 For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD! – Psalms 117

The psalmist calls all nations and all peoples to praise the LORD and extol Him. Why? Great is His steadfast love toward us, and His faithfulness endures forever. Who’s us? Not just Israel, but all nations, all peoples. This is not to say that God did not have a special love for Israel, but the psalmist claims that God loves all nations and all peoples, which is implied in his exhortation for all of them to praise Him. He had a general love for mankind which was expressed in His immeasurable “common grace” to all people, causing the rain to fall on the righteous and the unrighteous.

This was also, if not more importantly, pointing forward to the day that Jesus would die in the place of sinners, so that believers from all nations and all peoples would experience His love and special grace for His people.

Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol Him, all peoples! For great is His steadfast love toward us, and His faithfulness endures forever. Will you praise Him and extol Him today?

Lord, we praise You along with the multitudes of saints all over the world, for great is Your steadfast love and enduring faithfulness.
