40 But Peter put them all outside, and knelt down and prayed; and turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up.
41 And he gave her his hand and raised her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive.
42 And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. – Acts 9:40-42
This is not a resurrection story we hear very often. We remember when the Savior raised Lazarus and the girl, but how often do we hear about Tabitha? It was through Peter’s hand that the Holy Spirit raised her also from the dead. But notice how it was for a particular end.
In the time of the Apostles, specific men were granted gifts such as these in order to authenticate their message, which was that Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God and that He is risen. And the end of Tabitha’s raising is found in verse 42: many believed in the Lord.
What’s even more incredible than physical resurrections is that God, through Jesus, has raised us from spiritual death to spiritual life. That is what these first-century miracles were pointing to. Once Tabitha was raised, she would physically die again. But assuming that she repented and believed in Jesus (How could she not?), she lives forever with Him. That is the miracle that all we who believe in Him have experienced. We have been raised from death to life, and life abundant and eternal.
God, we praise You for raising us from the dead!
