What’s better than life?

What is better than life?  Answer: the love of God.  The psalmist writes,

Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. – Psalm 63:3

As the psalmist considers his own life, something that we all hold precious, he nonetheless concludes that God’s steadfast love (Heb. chesed) is yet better.  Life ebbs and flows.  Some days we are content and rejoicing.  Other times, we are discontent and groaning.  God’s love, on the other hand, is unchanging.  It is constant, it is immovable, and it is glorious.

This is why it makes sense that the psalmist says, my lips will praise You.  This is good reason indeed.  Do you count God’s steadfast love to be better than life?  If you don’t, search it out, because life alone will never satisfy you.  If you do, let’s praise Him with our lips.
