3 important reminders about God to start your day

Life is hard.  And you might be facing down what you know will be a difficult day today.  To start your day off right, be reminded about three important characteristics of God.  We’ll see them in Psalm 59:

But you, O LORD, laugh at them; you hold all the nations in derision. – Psalm 59:8

From this verse, we are reminded that

1. God is holy

Notice the words, But You.  This puts the Lord in contrast to the people in the previous verses, those who treacherously plot evil, those who implicitly challenge God by bellowing with their mouths and thinking, Who will hear us?

The words, But You, set God apart, which is precisely the meaning of being holy.  He is not like these evil men, and they are altogether not like Him.  He is someone quite other.

We are reminded that we serve a God who is holy, holy, holy, and that the whole earth is full of His glory.  And this should motivate us to walk through this day and every day with great joy.  The more we gaze upon His beauty and holiness, the less significant our trials seem to us.

2. God is faithful

We see this in the words, O LORD.  This word translated traditionally as LORD in all caps is God’s covenant name, Yahweh, which the psalmist specifically uses to appeal to God’s covenant love.  He could have used the word for “Lord” or the word for “God”, but instead refers to Him as Yahweh, the One who established a covenant with His people.

In that, we are reminded of His covenant faithfulness to us.  Romans 8:38-39 says, I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor heights nor depths, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Yahweh is faithful.  Christ is faithful.  And when we behold His faithfulness, we walk through our day without fear, confident that He will work all things for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purposes.  Even if that means discomfort or pain or hurt, we are comforted by His faithfulness.

3. God is mighty

This we see in that the Lord laughs at them, that is those who plot treacherously, those who snub Him.  He laughs at them because they are nothing compared to Him.  He created them and the earth that they stand on and the universe that engulfs it.  And not just these men, but He also holds all the nations in derision, scoffing at them, mocking them, bringing them to nothing.  Those who would challenge God are not a challenge at all.  They breathe because He allows it.  They are, themselves, laughable.  For God is mighty, and they are not.

God’s might readies us for this day and every day, because we’re reminded that He does whatever He pleases.  Therefore, whatever happens today, we know that it is part of His good and perfect will.  So, even if we face trials today, God is mighty.  He is on His throne.  And He knows what He is doing.

So, as you go on about your business, meditate on the fact that He is holy, that He is faithful, and that He is mighty.
