There’s a lot of panic right now in the United States and the watching world, including in the church of God—and rightfully so. The candidate who’s picking up the most steam and getting unbelievable support is a man who exhibits little to no godly qualities whatsoever.
We should pray that the Lord would stop Trump’s rise, and it’s good for us to do what we can to that end also. But at the end of the day, if it’s not the Lord’s will and we fail, we need to have the right mindset. The psalmist writes,
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah – Psalm 46:1-3
Similarly, though the world seems to be falling apart around us, though we live in an environment in which droves of people fall for this lunacy, we will not fear. Why? God is our refuge and strength.
Sheep, don’t take refuge in the Presidency. Don’t take refuge in the RNC. Don’t take refuge even in the Constitution. Take refuge in God. God never promised you a good President. But He has promised you greater joy and satisfaction in Him. Also, He has promised you eternity, if you have believed on His Son: Paul writes,
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.
20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope
21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. – Romans 8:18-21
The here and now is important. But it’s not nearly as important or glorious as what’s ahead. Look up toward that hope. Don’t be so bogged down by the present crisis that you lose sight of what Christ has purchased for you with His blood.
Finally, don’t forget that the hearts of kings are in His hand. Even if Trump or another terrible alternative sits in the Oval, God is sovereign. Let Him do what seems good to Him.
