What does “He will give you the desires of your heart” mean?

Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalm 37:4

So, here we see a condition.  If you do this, then that.  If a believer delights himself in God, God will give him the desires of his heart.  But what does that mean exactly?

It sounds like it could mean that God would change your heart’s desires.  But the real sense of the phrase is that God will give you what your heart desires.

But wait.  Isn’t our heart deceitful above all things and desperately sick (Jeremiah 18:9)?  Yes, in a sense.  But for the one who delights himself in God, his heart is transformed.

When a believer sets his mind on Christ, his desires change.  And when his desires are aligned with Christ’s, then he will be given what his heart desires.
