Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars! – Psalm 148:3
In this verse, the psalmist calls on the sun and the moon and the stars to praise God. Now, the none of these actually has a consciousness to be able to hear the psalmist’s call and listen to it, but that’s not the psalmist’s point.
He knows that all created things glorify God, whether consciously or not. Moreover, this is a strong statement against the idolatry of the world around him. Whereas the neighboring nations worshipped the sun, moon, and stars, the psalmist makes them merely our fellow-worshippers. Only God is worthy of praise, and He deserves praise from everyone and everything.
