When you feel like life isn’t fair

Have you ever wondered why it seems like many who don’t follow God seem blessed and many God-fearing people seem cursed?  You’re certainly in good company.  The psalmist in Psalm 73 wrestles with that conundrum himself.  He’s confused and discouraged because it seems like those who forsake God are more blessed than those who follow Him.  The psalmist is even to the point of questioning why he should even obey God at all.  Then, he meets with God in the sanctuary, and he is brought back to his right mind.  He realizes that temporary, physical blessings are not what life is all about.  They don’t bring true, lasting joy.  They might provide temporary happiness and comfort, but ultimately, it is God who permanently satisfies.

In verse 25, the psalmist says, “Whom have I in heaven but you?  And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.”  There is absolutely nothing in this world that could be better than having a right fellowship with the God of the universe.  Everything else pales in comparison to that.

So, when you look around at the world and it seems like many who are not Christ-followers are enjoying life while many Christians suffer pain and destitution, remember that those who don’t have Jesus are living their best life now.  Unless they repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for their salvation, this is the closest to heaven they will ever experience.  If this is you, escape the wrath of God which you deserve for your sin, by clinging to His grace offered in Jesus.  On the other hand, for the follower of Christ who suffers here on earth, this is the closest to hell you will ever experience.  You have eternal life, and your eternal life will be spent in continual, unmatched joy in Christ.  Rejoice!  There is nothing on earth to be desired besides God.
