Christmas Is About…

A Google search of “Christmas is about” quickly reveals today’s common sentiments about the holiday.  Here’s a sampling:

Christmas is about…

  • love
  • faith and making memories
  • hanging in there
  • love, not money
  • giving food to the needy
  • loving your family
  • giving and not getting
  • being together as family, friends, neighbors, people
  • being in community and celebrating relationships
  • forgetting and forgiving

None of these things is bad.  Certainly we all have warm memories of Christmas past, we should be focused more on giving than getting, and it is a wonderful time to spend with family.  But, Christian, be careful not to forget what Christmas is really about.

Christmas is about…

  • how “God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
  • how “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)
  • how “He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)
  • how “to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
  • saying with Mary, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Luke 1:47)

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
