In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 4:5)
The Apostle John tells us that in Jesus was life, the life that was necessary for a world filled with only dead people. John goes on to say that this life was the light of men, the light that was necessary for a world blind in darkness.
All men and women, without exception, have sinned against God, and they are spiritually dead. Even the most “enlightened” in this world, apart from Christ, are in total ignorance and darkness, and they are, as I am, in desperate need of a Savior.
The great news is what John tells us next. He tells us that the light shines in darkness. What a beautiful picture that is. Physically speaking, darkness is simply the lack of light. In a pitch black room, it’s not that darkness has swallowed the light. It’s simply that there is no light in the room. And similarly, as John tells us, the darkness has not overcome the light. The truth is that it can’t. The light always prevails.
Jesus shines as the light in this dead world in darkness. If you are a believer, you are a carrier of this light, and you are called to let it shine before men. If you don’t believe in Jesus, the light has been shone into this world. Will you have eyes to see? Your sin has separated you from God, and you are in a position where you deserve His eternal wrath. But this Jesus, God Himself, has taken on the punishment due sinners like you and me, and if you trust in Him, you will be saved from an eternal death and given eternal life.
