Moreover, all the earth came to Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth. (Genesis 41:57)
Joseph was still wrongfully imprisoned for the false accusation of violating Potiphar’s wife. The Pharaoh of Egypt had a dream that none of his magicians could understand, and the Pharaoh’s cupbearer remembered that Joseph had rightly interpreted his own dream before, when he too was in prison. Joseph was called upon, and once again, by God’s grace, he interpreted Pharaoh’s dream correctly. There were to be seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. Because of the wisdom that Joseph displayed, Pharaoh made him ruler over all of Egypt, second only to himself.
When the drought came, under Joseph’s direction, Egypt had stored up plenty of food, both for itself and the rest of the known world. When they needed food, “all the earth came to Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth” (Genesis 41:57).
Hundreds of years later, God the Father would send His only Son to reveal to the earth that there is a severe spiritual famine. All the earth is in desperate need for spiritual food lest they perish, and they must come to this greater Joseph, Jesus Christ, to survive. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). There is no other source of grain. The world is perishing from spiritual starvation, and Jesus is the only salvation. You who are starving, come to Him, and He will freely give you eternal refreshment.
